About
RackSRV
RackSRV Communications first opened its doors to trade with the public as a proprietorship during the early months of 2007. The objective was simple, to offer cheap, no-frills yet reliable UK Dedicated Servers and Server Colocation hosting solutions to home and business users alike who could not afford or would refuse to pay the high premiums involved in dealing directly with a Data Centre or large corporate service provider.
Since the initial launch which in the early days consisted of a hand full of custom built DualCore servers located within Thus IPH House (formerly Legend IP House), RackSRV has always managed to make a sustainable turnover and after a mere 6 months of trading in such a saturated market, all personal loans were paid back in full and the business began making a healthy consistent profit which allowed for rapid expansion.
The situation at RackSRV today is a far cry from the expectations back when launching in 2007. What started off as a part-time hobby consisting of a few servers hosted within a self managed rack at a cheap DC in London has now developed into a Limited, VAT registered company with an annual six figure turnover which owns hundreds of servers located within multiple Data Centres in the UK.
Going forward, the aim for RackSRV is much the same as what has helped in its success to date i.e. a superior yet cost effective service backed by friendly and dedicated UK based support that is always happy to help. We believe our approach to this market place will one day make RackSRV the leading brand name within the hosting industry!
Our
Network
RackSRV have equipment located within several UK Data Centre facilities for redundancy purposes but our primary point of presence (POP) resides within SOTA, a premium tier-3 facility which is situated within the picturesque and secure surroundings of Kent Science Park in South East England. From here we pickup global IP transit from ‘SynergyWorks Internet’ as well as terminate our ‘Burstfire’ backhaul from Telecity East in Docklands.
Both our upstreams operate fully BGP compliant and resilient networks utilising 'best path' routing policies to ensure optimal latency and minimal packet loss to users across the world and furthermore, RackSRV are one of the few UK service providers with arrangements in place to, where necessary, optimise outbound routes if multiple routes to the user are available.
Purely for disaster recovery purposes we have recently opened a new secondary POP located in Manchester where key internal services such as our status blog, offsite backup storage and internal network monitoring services are hosted from. After all, what’s the logic in hosting our mail server from within the same facility as the core network because if there was a critical outage, there would be no means to contact clients to keep them informed!
Data
Centre
Our primary POP is a newly built facility named ‘SOTA’ and is based within Kent, South East England. Our office is little over 30 mins away from the site allowing us to make regular visits. Furthermore, for peace of mind, we have contracts in place to have engineers onsite within minutes should an emergency ever occur, regardless of the time!
Redundant Power
SOTA provide us a redundant, high-capacity, stable and reliable power supply with easy scalable expansion in the future. Power is isolated between racks and maintained indefinite. The facility use high specification UPS units to maintain the entire building power should the mains grid fail and high specification on-site generators which can deal with both customer and plant load whilst recharging the UPS.
Air Conditioning
To ensure optimum performance, all data floors are maintained at a constant 21°C ± 2°C and relative humidity is kept at 50% ± 10%. Both are continually monitored by the electronic building management system which also monitors and remotely operates sensors covering electrical, mechanical, fire detection and leak detection systems.
Fire Detection/Suppression
Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus (VESDA) has been installed at SOTA.
These highly sensitive smoke detectors are linked to the Building Management system which is pro-actively monitored from a network operations centre. This system provides very early detection to help avoid fire, loss and business disruption. This coupled with an FM200 gas based fire retardant that is environmentally friendly enables fires to be put out instantly without damaging equipment.
We are more than happy to offer prospetive clients a tour of our Kent facility just contact us for further information and to arrange a visit.
Network
Test
Due to our experience in the gaming market in a former life where low latency and optimal routing are vital, RackSRV understands the need for high quality internet bandwidth. We have spared no expense in insuring that our switching equipment is up to the job as having access to fantastic internet routing is pointless without having suitable hardware for delivery!
Here is an extract about the network topology of our primary upstream:
"SynergyWorks operates its own multi-gigabit BGP4 enabled network. Our network spans 5 UK data-centres where we connect to 4 global transit feeds and gain access to over 125'000 low latency partial & peering routes."
Please feel free to test your latency and routing to our multi-gigabit UK network via the following IP: 91.204.211.240.
You can also test your throughput to our network by grabbing a 10MB or 100MB test file from our webserver at service2.racksrv.com/speed/
